What Does Melanoma Look Like?

Melanoma is a skin cancer that typically looks like a much disorganized mole. Essentially, this is what melanoma is. So what does melanoma look like exactly? Below are some examples so you can answer this question.

Asymmetrical: Melanoma will typically come in a form that is not a symmetrical form. All this simply means is that it is not even on both sides. If you were to fold it in half, the lines and sides would not match up. If you notice, moles that are not malignant will be usually perfectly round. This means they are symmetrical. When you fold the round mole in half, you will have no area where there is overhang.

The color changes: In a normal mole, the color will not change. It will always be the color it started out being. If you have melanoma, it will change colors. The colors will be brown and black. They will often alternate between these two colors and with no general pattern.

Size of the mole changes: If the size of the mole changes, there is a good chance that it is melanoma and it is spreading. This means that you have cancerous skin cells and they are spreading to non cancerous skin cells and deteriorating them. Melanoma can spread very rapidly and affect the lymph areas. This can be fatal if not stopped. When people ask, what does melanoma look like? This is often the best answer you can get.

Border of the mole: pay attention to the border of the mole. Does it have a defined border or is it just kind of there and not there? This is another good sign of if you might have melanoma or not. Often times, melanoma will look like a sporadic blob of discolored skin. There is no definition.

Check the size: Melanoma typically will be bigger in size by the time you notice it. Although you can notice it quickly and it can be smaller, the usual size will be bigger than 6 millimeters in size. This is roughly the size of an eraser on a pencil.

If you are wondering what does melanoma look like, and have read the above, please see your doctor, especially if you have any of the above symptoms. It is better safe now than sorry later on.
