Stage 4 Melanoma

There are stages to the melanoma cycle, and those stages range from 0-IV. Depending on which stage the patient is in depends on what kind of treatment is available. Being that stage 4 melanoma is the final stage, there are not many cures that can come of this stage.

 

When entering stage 4 melanoma, the patient has already had cancer tumors removed from the skin, their lymph nodes attacked as well as infected internal organs. The cancer has spread to such organs as the liver, lungs and more. Once internal organs are hit by cancer in stage 4 melanoma, there is really no cure or prolonged life span objective. The main objective is to make it as painless as possible and comfort the patient.

 

Studies of chemotherapy have shown no good affects to curing stage 4 melanoma patients. Skin cancer, melanoma being the deadliest, is a very serious concern for this very factor. Most people can notice changes in their skin and moles; however, there are some people who cannot.

 

It is very important to catch melanoma in stage 0 for this very reason. This is where it is most manageable and has a 100% cure rate for the most part. All that is involved is taking out the cancer tumor before it roots itself deeper. As the tumor roots deeper, the problems then begin. As the stages increase, the risk of fatality also increases. By the time the patient reaches stage 4 melanoma, the person is down to a seven to ten percent five year survival rate. This is a significant decrease from even the thirty to seventy percent chance at stage 3.

 

Stage 4 melanoma brings a lot of things into perspective. Being that there is no cure for this cancer, many people opt to participate in study groups in hopes of finding a cure. For the most part this does not happen, however, there is always that chance. Moreover, it is not just giving the patient a chance; it is giving everyone else suffering from melanoma a fighting chance. There might even be a possible cure for those about to go into stage 4 melanoma. In all, time will only tell.
