Melanoma Cancer

Melanoma cancer is a type of cancer which afflicts the skin initially. To be precise melanoma cancer first affects the pigment producing cells of the skin. The way melanoma cancer spreads is through the new pigment cells produced by these cells. Overtime this allows the melanoma cancer to begin to spread over a greater portion of the

skin. The initial stages of this type of cancer are fairly slow to progress but its progressive speed increases exponentially over time as the cancer begins to affect an ever increasing portion of the skin.

Eventually melanoma cancer begins to spread from the pigment producing cells to the lymph nodes. When melanoma cancer begins to affect the lymph nodes it starts to have real potential to become life threatening. From the lymph nodes the melanoma cancer cells can gain access to the blood stream. Once these melanoma cancer cells have gained access to the blood stream they can begin moving around the patient’s body. Once this has occurred, the melanoma cancer cells can begin to move into other organs including the kidneys, lungs, and liver. Over time this can cause melanoma cancer tumors to begin forming on these organs which can quickly lead to death.

Treatment of melanoma cancer is generally considered to be somewhat difficult. The first steps in treating melanoma cancer involve removing any skin or tissue which is affected by the condition. If it is caught early enough this can work extremely well by preventing the cancer cells to spread throughout more of the skin. Unfortunately once it has begun to spread treatment becomes increasingly difficult. For patients who have melanoma which has spread to the lymph nodes extensive chemotherapy and interferon treatments have the most success.

The success rate for regression using these treatment methods for melanoma range somewhere around forty percent. If melanoma cancer is able to spread from the lymph nodes to other major organs the overall success rate drops considerably. Most figures put a survival rate of somewhere around three to five percent for patients who have melanoma which has spread from their lymph nodes to their internal organs.
