Is Melanoma Fatal?

Melanoma is a skin cancer that is the most deadly of all skin cancers. The way melanoma is broken down is by stages. There are five stages ranging from stage 0 to stage IV. Of these stages, stage 0 is the least problematic and has a 100% cure rate in theory. Of course, there are always exceptions, but for the most part, the melanoma can be removed because it is just on the epidermis and not any deeper.

When the melanoma moves to stage IV, this is where the problem comes in. Many people ask “is melanoma fatal?” and the answer, when to the stage IV is yes. In stage IV it is really a matter of making the person suffering from melanoma more comfortable. There is no real treatment that will prolong their life. Chemotherapy, for the most part, has had no positive results with prolonging someone’s life when they suffer from melanoma.

Is Melanoma Fatal in the beginning stage? No, the five year survival rate on melanoma in stage zero is one hundred percent. It is very uncommon for anyone that has undergone melanoma removal surgery to have any problems. This is because it is considered non invasive.

Is melanoma fatal in Stage I? Melanoma has a five year rate of survival of eighty nine to ninety five percent. This means that for every one in a hundred people that are diagnosed with melanoma, only five to eleven people will develop into stage IV where melanoma is fatal.

Is melanoma fatal in Stage II? Stage II offers a fifty to eighty percent chance of survival in the five year plan. This means that fifty to eighty people out of a hundred will not progress to stage IV.

Is melanoma fatal in Stage III? This is the second to worst stage that melanoma gets to. The chances of survival are decreased significantly to a five year survival ratio of 30 percent to seventy percent. This rate depends on how many lymph nodes are affected by the melanoma.

The earlier melanoma is caught and treated, the better off the five year survival rate will be. To answer the question of “is melanoma fatal?”, the answer is yes, if you do not catch it in time.
