Identifying Skin Melanoma
Identifying skin melanoma is always a hard task. Many people mistake melanoma for a mole. In many cases, moles never develop into anything; so many people find a false sense of security in that notion. What they do not realize is that it only takes a short period of time for someone who has melanoma to become completely consumed by it. For the most part, catching melanoma in its first stages is very imperative. After the first stage, the condition and five year survival rate of it progressing to the fourth stage become slim.
There are many ways of identifying skin melanoma. The most common features of the melanoma cancer are quite defined and can be summed up the following way as described below.
Identifying skin melanoma:
1. The outline of the area is not defined. Typically melanoma will not have defined edges. It will look like it is almost bleeding into the skin in most cases.
2. The color changes: If the color of the mole changes, you need to contact your
doctor, as this is a sign of melanoma. The colors it will change are typically
brown, black and pink.
3. The Shape Change: When the shape of the mole changes, this is not a good
sign, especially if it looks as though it is getting bigger. No mole should be
any bigger than roughly 6 millimeters in width.
4. Scaly, cracking, puss, or bleeding out of a mole is never normal.
These are all signs of identifying skin melanoma. If you think you are at risk of melanoma, contact your doctor to get it checked. Although there are ways that identifying skin melanoma can be effective, the only sure way of knowing if it is melanoma or not is to go to the doctor. There, they will take a sample of the area and look at it under a microscope. If melanoma is present, they will begin to remove the melanoma and provide a prognosis of the melanoma cancer.
Identifying skin melanoma should always be left to the doctor. If a doctor sees no worry in it, and you still feel you might have melanoma, contact another doctor for a second opinion or specifically ask for a biopsy anyway.
